Welcome to Mike O'Neal's Navy Page. I am a graduate of San Diego's Naval Training Center, Company 245, June 1968. After boot camp I attended Water Survival and Assault Boat Engineer Schools at the Coronado Amphibious Base, near San Diego. The U.S.S. Coconino County (LST-603) was my first assignment. Reported aboard her in August 68 at Ship Repair Facility, Subic Bay P.I. In June 1969 the 603 was transferred to the South Vietnamese Navy and was renamed the VNN Vung Tau (HQ 503). The 603 crew was then assigned to the U.S.S. Outagamie County (LST-1073). In December, 1969 I attended Damage Control and Fire Fighting school at Treasure Island near San Francisco. I then reported to the U.S.S. Satyr (ARL-23) In January,1970 for a one-year tour of duty in the Mekong Delta. The Satyr was assigned to the Mobile Riverine Force, which was a joint operation involving the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army's 9th Infantry Division. In September 1971 the Satyr was turned over to the South Vietnamese Navy and renamed the Vinh Long (HQ-802). After my Satyr tour I returned to the States and was assigned to the AFDL-6 (Floating Dry Dock) in Little Creek, VA. Discharge from the Navy came in January 1972.
